  • 1 set of Mathletics number cards 1 to 10 1-10
  • 1 set of Mathletics word cards 1 to 10 1-10

How to play

Set up

  1. Arrange students into pairs or 2 teams.
  2. Player 1 receives the number cards. They shuffle or mix up the cards and place them face down.
  3. Player 2 receives the word cards. They shuffle or mix up the cards and place them face up.

Count the sounds

Rules

  1. Player 1 turns over the top card and does not show player 2.
  2. Player 1 claps the number on their card.
  3. Player 2 listens and then selects the same number from their set of word cards.
  4. Player 1 reveals their number card.
  5. If it is a match, the cards are placed in the middle.
  6. When all cards are matched, students swap roles and start again.

Variations

CHANGE it down

  • Reduce the number range.
  • Provide a number path printable to assist in counting.

CHANGE it up

  • Extend the number range.
  • Use Mathletics image cards instead of number cards.
  • Introduce skip counting by adjusting the sound emphasis (eg 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 …)

What to look for

  • Are students able to count in their head while they clap? Do they count aloud?
  • Are students able to count the sounds correctly? Do they count aloud?
