How to play

Set up

  1. Arrange all students in pairs or small groups.
  2. Provide each group with Mathletics number cards 1 to 10 and materials for recording.
  3. Each group arranges their number cards face up in a line.

Rules

  1. The teacher rolls 2 dice and displays the numbers so all groups can see.
  2. Groups work together to create a number sentence using the 2 dice numbers to make one of the target card numbers (1 to 10).
  3. Groups record their number sentence.
  4. Groups flip over the Mathletics number card that has been created with the number sentence.
  5. Continue rolling the dice and recording the number sentences until a group has managed to flip over all of their number cards.
  6. If a group is unable to make a number sentence to match one of their remaining target numbers, they wait for the next dice roll.
  7. The winning group reads out their number sentences to check that they have managed to make all 10 numbers correctly.

Variations

CHANGE it down

  • Allow only addition and subtraction operations.

CHANGE it up

  • Use Mathletics cards up to 20.
  • Roll 3 dice.

What to look for

  • Are students able to fluently recall facts within 10?
  • Are students able to use any multiplication or division?
  • Are students able to predict which numbers need to be rolled in order to win?
