Making equal parts

Joann and Ed are going for a swim. Let's hope they're both prepared!

Learning intention

Students will learn how to:

make and find matching halves.

Success criteria

I will know I have been successful if I can:

  • find two halves that make a whole
  • colour half of a shape
  • fold a shape in half.

Prerequisites

  • Understand the meaning of ‘fair’

Languages

Reinforce the use of language related to fractions and equality: share, halve, half, equal parts, whole

Misconceptions

  • Halves do not have to be equal.

Before the video

  • Role play: Demonstrate sharing a group of objects between 2 children. First share unfairly and then share fairly. Ask students what makes a fair share.

Mathletics halves cards (halves of shapes or objects):

  • Give each student or pair of students a half card.
  • Ask the students to find the person/pair with the other matching half.
  • Repeat, giving each student a different shape. Ask students to predict/draw the whole shape before they find the matching card.
