What happened in the last chapter? Una, Jiro and Spot stopped at a sports stadium on the day of the Buzz Ball Championships! Together they helped a team of bees prepare for the big sporting match by sharing positive messages. The outcome was a draw and everyone celebrated.
The colours of the rainbow: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet are the 7 colours we see in a rainbow, a phenomenon that sometimes occurs after rain. Why does this happen? Science can answer that! All white light is made up of the 7 colours of the spectrum. When sunlight enters a water droplet, some of the light is reflected and some of the light is refracted and split up into the colours of the spectrum, creating the beautiful rainbow we see in the sky. Try making a rainbow together with your students by shining the light of a torch into a clear prism. The torch is the sun and the prism is the water droplet, the result … a rainbow!
7 days of the week: In the story, when the tired adventurers check Jiro’s journal, they see that they have been travelling for a full week. Ask students how many days there are in a week. Recite the days of the week together as a class. Discuss activities that usually happen during the week, such as going to school, having lunch, playing sports etc and what activities they might do on the weekend. Ask students what they think the travellers were looking at in Jiro’s journal to know that they had been travelling for a full week. Discuss the idea of calendars as a tool for tracking days and time. Have students create their own weekly calendar by using the days of the week and adding daily tasks or activities.
Camouflage and colour: Arty is a chameleon. Chameleons have an extraordinary ability to change colours to hide in their environment. Explore the features of chameleon camouflage. Which colours can chameleons change to? Learn about chameleons changing their colour for other purposes than camouflage — finding a mate, scaring away predators and controlling heat. What techniques do other creatures use if they do not have the ability to camouflage? Discuss how colours represent mood. View artworks that use colour to portray a mood. Explore which colours get hotter in the sun.
