Learning intention
Students will learn how to:
express number sentences to show how many are left when objects are taken away from an existing collection of up to 5 objects.

Prerequisites
- Numbers to 5
- Addition within 5
- Counting back from 5 to 1
Language
Reinforce the use of the language of subtraction: take away, makes, left, count back, number path, # take away # is #
Before the video
- Engage children in the theme by role playing a borrowing interaction with a student.
- Ask, ‘What does borrowing mean?’ and draw students’ attention to the fact that borrowing means ‘taking away’.
- Discuss good manners for borrowing and the language of borrowing.
During the video
First viewing:
Watch the video without stopping or pausing. Then, ask the children to explain what happened in the video. Begin to draw out key vocabulary or possible misconceptions.

After the video
Video freeze frames:
- Display the freeze frames so all students can see.
- Students work in pairs to model each scene with real objects (five frames, beads, number lines, fingers) using the sentence displayed on the freeze frame, eg ‘Can I please borrow # _____’.
- Record number sentences using Mathletics operation cards and Mathletics number cards, eg 5 take away 3 is 2.

Use five frames to play ‘Can I borrow?’
- Player 1 starts with a five frame filled with 5 counters. Player 2 asks, ‘Can I borrow [3]?’. Player 2 gives [3] counters. Player 1 now asks to borrow some counters. Continue taking turns.
