Emma is all packed ready for school, but is Ed ready?

Learning intention

Students will learn how to:

express number sentences to show how many are left when objects are taken away from an existing collection of up to 5 objects.

Success criteria

I will know I have been successful if I can:

say or write a number sentence to show how many objects are left.

Prerequisites

  • Numbers to 5
  • Addition within 5
  • Counting back from 5 to 1

Language

Reinforce the use of the language of subtraction: take away, makes, left, count back, number path, # take away # is #

Before the video

  • Engage children in the theme by role playing a borrowing interaction with a student.
  • Ask, ‘What does borrowing mean?’ and draw students’ attention to the fact that borrowing means ‘taking away’.
  • Discuss good manners for borrowing and the language of borrowing.

After the video

Video freeze frames:

  • Display the freeze frames so all students can see.
  • Students work in pairs to model each scene with real objects (five frames, beads, number lines, fingers) using the sentence displayed on the freeze frame, eg ‘Can I please borrow # _____’.
  • Record number sentences using Mathletics operation cards and Mathletics number cards, eg 5 take away 3 is 2.
