Number snap!

How to play

Set up

  1. Arrange students into pairs.
  2. Shuffle or mix up the cards and distribute half to each player.
  3. Place the cards in a pile face down in front of each player.

Number snap!

Rules

  1. Player 1 turns over their top card and places it face up next to their pile.
  2. Player 2 turns over their top card and places it face up next to their pile.
  3. Students continue taking turns to turn over their top card.
  4. If the cards on both piles represent the same number, students call ‘snap’. Note: Discourage students from placing their hand over the cards. Instead, students could clap as they say ‘snap’.
  5. The player who calls ‘snap’ first keeps all of the cards that have been turned over and adds them to the bottom of their pile.
  6. Play continues until time is up or one player runs out of cards.
  7. The winner is the player with the most cards at the end of the game.

Variations

CHANGE it down

  • Reduce number range to 5.
  • Assign a ‘snap’ judge to each pair to help determine the ‘winner’ of each ‘snap’.

CHANGE it up

  • Students both place cards on the same pile so that they need to remember the number below.
  • Extend number range to 20.

What to look for

  • Can students connect different representations of the numbers 0 to 10?
  • Are students able to subitise picture representations or do they always need to count all?
