A game of snap matching a number with one more or one less than itself.

Materials

Card sets

• 1 set of Mathletics number cards 1 to 10 1-10
• 1 set of Mathletics word cards 1 to 10 1-10
• 1 set of Mathletics image cards 1 to 10 1-10

How to play

Set up

1. Arrange students into pairs sitting side-by-side.
2. Shuffle or mix up the cards then separate them into 2 even piles.
3. Place 1 pile face down in front of each player.

Rules

1. Player 1 turns over their top card and places it face up in the middle of the players.
2. Player 2 turns over their top card and places it face up beside the first card.
3. Player 1 turns over another card and places it on their pile.
4. If the card is 1 more or 1 less than the previous, the first player to call ‘snap’ wins both piles of ‘played’ cards.

Variations

CHANGE it down

• Reduce the number range to 1 to 5.
• Limit the card range to just 2 types.

CHANGE it up

• Increase the number range to 1 to 20.
• Change the rules to play with numbers that are 10 more or 10 less.

What to look for

• Can students identify 1 more or 1 less without counting aloud?
• Are students able to quickly identify 1 less (rather than just 1 more)?
